HTC Sensation Power Button Issue After Upgrading

Ever since I updated my HTC Sensation to Android 2.3.4, my power button has been acting up.

Firstly, when I hit the power button to turn the screen off, the screen goes off for half a second then comes back on again.
Secondly, when I hit the Home button, it automatically takes a screenshot (it should only take screenshot when I press power button followed by Home button). Both these scenarios happen 50% of the time.

So I sent it back for warranty. After a week, I got it back. They claimed that nothing is wrong with my power button and they tested it everyday. Nevertheless, they replaced me with a new back cover. However, the problem persists.

I sent it back to warranty again, stating that the problem is still there despite using a new back cover. After a week, finally I got my phone back and the problem is fixed now. According to them, they've replaced a part called Rigid Flex. Til now, I still don't understand why a software update could cause hardware malfunction.

  3. Im pretty sure the update wasnt the actual cause, just coincedental. If the rigid flex has indeed completely fixed the problem it's nothing to do with the software. I've got a problem with my power button and the problem can be seen to happen on boot recovery mode, even before the operating system has loaded. Im gonna see if I can get a new rigid flex bit and see if it helps me.

    1. Some say is hardware issue and some say is software issue. You can send it back for warranty to see if it is a hardware issue

  5. I had exactly the same problem so I e mailed htc and they sent me a new back cover which looks slightly different, it appears to have 2 less contact points than the original one anyway my power button has not played up since i fitted the new back cover.

  6. Maybe that's a new design of back cover that solved some of the issues with the phone?

  7. My original Sensation (about 7 months old now) has this problem so I tried fitting the battery cover from my Sensation XE (1 week old). The XE cover seems to be the newer version mentioned above, with fewer silver squares on it. Unfortunately there was no change, the problem remains.

Personally I think the problem lies with the part of the main phone body that the power button pressed against. If there's a build up of dirt/dust in there, it could make the phone think that the power button iss being pressed even when it's not. That would explain my symptoms, which are (1) pressing Home takes a screenshot, (2) pressing power often wakes the phone and brings up the power-off menu a couple of seconds later, (3) multiple presses of power button needed to put phone in standby or wake it again, and (4) unusually fast battery drain when screen is off overnight and system says phone has been awake all that time.

    1. All the problems you mentioned happened to me too before they replaced the rigid flex. Or maybe is because the dust is cleared like what you mentioned. Maybe there's way for us to try and clear the dust to see if it works?

  9. What is rigid flex. Unfortunately my phone is out of warranty and I have to fix it myself. My wife kept the phone on water and now the power button does not work.
